Many people believe that dreams are strictly at night and visions are for the day. However, if we look to scripture, we can see there is a template for deciphering between the two.
And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:”
Acts 2:17
Old men shall dream dreams, this has to be symbolic text because if this was literal, no one but old men would have dreams and we can see that this is not true from the many unbelievers that have had dreams.
This text refers to wisdom, it takes maturity to understand the parabolic speech of God.
An example of this would be the dreamer Joseph. Joseph was different from his brother, he was educated by his father. Education and knowledge and wisdom is a characteristic of dream interpretation. Therefore, dreams are often more symbolic in nature.
Your young men shall see visions, because of their youth they cannot easily decipher symbols. They are usually in process of their education so they cannot properly under- stand the mysteries of God. So visions are more literal in nature, an example would be
And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, I the LORD will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream”
Number 12:6 6
Here we see that the Lord said he will make himself known in a vision.
This is showing that he will reveal himself in a way that you will understand it’s him with little interpretation.
Visions are more literal in nature.
Dreams are more symbolic.
There are three main categories of dreams, we will discuss a few of the characteristics of each category to gain a better understanding of the types of dreams you can have. This should help you determine the level of study necessary to interpret.
Elementary dreams
There is very little interpretation involved. These types of spiritual dreams are to the point, direct & self-interpreted. Genesis 20:3 Abimelech understood the dream he received from God regarding Sarah there was no need for interpretation.
Intermediate dreams
Dreams can be very symbolic in nature, using anything from clothes to waterfalls. Intermediate dreams will often tell a story that we will understand through symbols of our own life. Joseph dreams were filled with things that they used on and everyday bases. Josephs brothers even understood his dreams to the point they wanted to kill him because of it. This type of dream is often full of symbols, yet easy to understand.
Advanced dreams
These dreams require Revelation knowledge. These dreams may need to be interpreted by someone who has a gift in interpretation. This person will have a close personal relationship with God and have certain revelatory gifts to ascertain revelation. An example is when Joseph was summoned to pharaoh to interpret his dream, because it alluded him. Genesis 41:14
Take some time right now to make these confessions for the night:
- I will not be afraid of the arrow that flies by day or the terror that comes at night Lord, show forth Your salvation in my life from day to day.
- I bind the screech owl in the name of Jesus (Isa. 34:14).
- I bind any attack upon my life at night.
- I take authority over every demon that is released against me and my family at night.
- Let the evening tide trouble the enemies that would attack my life in the name of Jesus.
- I bind and rebuke every spirit that would creep against me at night. I bind and rebuke the pestilence that walks in darkness.
- I will rest at night because the Lord gives me sleep.
- Let Your angels guard and protect me at night.
- Lord, give me deliverance in the night season (Acts 12:6–7). Lord, let my reins instruct me in the night season (Ps. 16:7). Your song shall be with me in the night (Ps. 42:8).
- I will meditate upon You in the night watches (Ps. 63:6).
- I receive Your knowledge in the night (Ps. 19:2).
- I receive Your faithfulness every night (Ps. 92:2).
- I bind and rebuke every vampire spirit in the name of Jesus (Lev. 11:19).
- I bind and rebuke all incubus and succubus spirits that would attack at night in the name of Jesus.
- I bind and take authority over all nightmares and demonic dreams at night in the name of Jesus.
- I am set in my ward whole nights (Isa. 21:8)
I decree that you will walk in a new level of revelation. The Lord will make himself known to you in dreams and visions. He will reveal Himself in a way that you will understand it’s Him. I speak this over you, and I release great faith to come upon you today.
