Entering into God’s rest

Entering into God’s rest 1

Welcome to Impact University.

It is so important to God for us to live healthy, fulfilled, happy and joyful lives.  If we want to go the distance in our walk with God, we have to learn to REST.   The Lord speaks to us not just physical rest, but also spiritual rest.

In the following scripture, Paul is talking to Hebrew believers telling them that God wanted them to enter into His rest, but there was a danger of them not entering into the rest.

Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it. For we also have had the good news proclaimed to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed. Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said, “So I declared on oath in my anger, ‘They shall never enter my rest.’” And yet his works have been finished since the creation of the world. “

Hebrews 4:1-3

We that have believed entered into the REST of the Lord.

For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: “On the seventh day God rested from all his works.” And again in the passage above he says, “They shall never enter my rest.”

Hebrews 4:4

Therefore since it still remains for some to enter that rest, and since those who formerly had the good news proclaimed to them did not go in because of their disobedience.”

Hebrews 4:6

He’s telling these Hebrew believers not to fall into the same trap of unbelief that their ancestors did.  Their ancestors did not believe God.  Many of them died in the wilderness and did not enter into the promised land.

The promised land was intended to be a place of rest from their enemies.  Sitting under their own vine and fig tree, but many of them did not enter into their rest, they had unbelief, they hardened their hearts.

God again set a certain day, calling it “Today.” This he did when a long time later he spoke through David, as in the passage already quoted:

“Today, if you hear his voice,
    do not harden your hearts.”[d]

Hebrews 4:7

This scripture is referring to Psalm 95, and Joshua.  Joshua did not really give them true rest.  In the book of Judges you will find that they kept getting into bondage. They would only have rest for a short period of time.  Deliverance brought them rest, but it was only temporary.

Jesus is the only one that brought them true REST.

There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; 10 for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his. 11 Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.”

Hebrews 4:9-11

The thing that keeps us out of God’s rest is: UNBELIEF.

Faith in Christ is the thing that brings you into rest. In this place of faith you are no longer working for salvation, you are not working to keep the law.  You cease from your own works as God did from His works on the seventh day.

  • You are saved by grace.
  • You are not working to earn heaven.
  • You are saved by grace through faith, not of yourself.
  • It is a gift from God.

Entering into rest by faith means that you believe in Christ.

  • You believe in His redemption.
  • You believe in His power.
  • You believe in His strength.
  • You rest in His grace.
  • You believe for God to strengthen you, protect you, provide for you, deliver you, do all the things that done through the shed blood of Jesus.  Through his redemption.

That is what it means to enter into his rest.

When you operate in doubt and unbelief, that is what makes serving God a struggle.  You try to serve and do things in your own strength, or in your own energy.  You are trying to be legalistic and work your way into heaven.  You may be trying to leave clean and live holy.  No! It’s by grace people of God.  It is only by his grace, his strength, his power his ability, his might. Through the spirit of God you are able to live clean, live free from bondages of the world, to be delivered, to walk in power.

Paul was telling the Hebrews, if you don’t accept Christ, if you chose to go back into the old covenant way of thinking, if you leave and depend on the law, then you will not enter into God’s ultimate rest.

You can have heaven on earth by walking in the spirit and entering in to the rest of God.

God wants you to walk by faith and believe this. He wants you to walk by faith and not by sight.

Do not allow worry, pain, sadness, discomfort, to disturb your rest.  You should be a restful, peaceful, quiet believer.  Renounce turmoil and anxiety in your life.

Serving God is not a job, it is not laborious. Do not allow yourself to get in strife and fear.  Believe God for provision and for all of your needs to be provided.

Jesus came to bring you into rest.

He came so you can live in His grace, power and love.

Trust God and enter into His rest.  This is the way the Lord wants you to live and believe for. Live by faith!  Walk by faith!
