Be amazed by the Lord

Welcome to Impact University.

I believe the AWE and fear of the Lord is connected to a revelation of His greatness, glory, power, and majesty.

Many have lost their AWE and respect for God.

Awe is connected to God’s majesty and greatness. Awe recognizes God’s splendor and glory.

Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah. “

Psalm 4:4

Awe is a state of amazement.

Ask yourself:

  • Have I lost awe for the word of God?
  • Have I become so familiar with God and His word ?
  • Do I still find wonder and amazement when studying and declaring His word?

Awe is fear mingled with admiration or reverence; reverential fear (Webster’s Dictionary, 1828).

Let all the earth fear the Lord: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. Psalm 33:8 Princes have persecuted me without a cause: but my heart standeth in awe of thy word. “

Psalm 119:161

Israel saw this power and majesty at Sinai and feared. They asked Moses to go and receive the words of God. Notice Moses’ statement. And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off. And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die. And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not. Exodus 20:18-20 Fear and dread came upon Jacob when he encountered a God at Bethel. And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful is this place! this is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven. Genesis 28:17 Daniel called God “The great and dreadful God,” (Dan. 9:4). Dreadful means fearsome, awesome or awe-inspiring. The Expanded Translation says, “God who causes fear and wonder.”

He is the God who deserves respect.

We show this awe and respect in worship by kneeling and bowing. The Hebrew word for worship is shachach which means to bow.

O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the Lord our maker.”

Psalm 95:6

Bowing and kneeling are symbols of awe, submission and respect.

You can learn the fear of the Lord.

“Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the Lord. What man is he that desireth life, And loveth many days, that he may see good? Keep thy tongue from evil, And thy lips from speaking guile. Depart from evil, and do good; Seek peace, and pursue it.”

Psalm 34:11-14

Notice again that the fear of the Lord is connected to the tongue, and departing from evil. Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking guile. The fear of the Lord is to depart from evil.

In addition, we are told to do good, seek peace, and pursue it.

Wisdom warns those who do not choose the fear of the Lord.

“Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; They shall seek me early, but they shall not find me: For that they hated knowledge, And did not choose the fear of the Lord: They would none of my counsel: They despised all my reproof. Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, And be filled with their own devices. “Proverbs 1:28-31

Wisdom will not answer when you get in trouble. You will eat the fruit of your own way. It is not wise to ignore and reject the fear of the Lord. You must choose the fear of the Lord if you want to live a life pleasing to the Lord. Remember wisdom and the fear of the Lord are inextricably connected

“Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another: and the Lord hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his name. And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.” Malachi 3:16-17

When you consider how amazing the Lord is:

  • Your heart should be full of AWE.
  • Read the word with expectation and wonder.
  • Approach the Lord with reverence and admiration.
  • During your time of worship shachach in His presence.
  • Keep your tongue guarded from speaking evil.
  • Every day – pursue peace and do good.

Those who fear the Lord are God’s special treasure. A person who fears the Lord is valuable to the Lord. They are called “God’s jewels.” They are in God’s Book of Remembrance. That’s us! We are His special people, that’s amazing! Let’s praise Him for his goodness and bless his Holy name!
